In 1990 Lilly Endowment announced the GIFT (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow) initiative. It was launched on the premise that local citizens are the best judges of their own philanthropic needs and priorities. Through five GIFT phases and two programs - - “Taking Stock” and “Sustaining Resource Development” - - community foundations now serve every one of Indiana’s 92 counties in a variety of ways.
Asset-building, operating-support and special-project grants have encouraged public support and engaged the interest of local citizens in improving the lives around them. Besides being grantmakers, community foundations play important leadership roles in their communities - - identifying community needs and convening community dialogues to formulate strategies and marshal resources to address them.
A critical resource common to all GIFT phases and programs and available to the foundations and their communities is technical assistance. This technical assistance component is housed with the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance.
