General Criteria
Associate membership is generally open to tax exempt organizations that either seek grants from grantmaking foundations or
corporations or that work in partnership with such grantmakers to support charitable activities in the state, including:
Traditional Charitable Organizations
Organizations under 501 (c) (3)
Churches
Schools
Governmental units
Publicly supported nonprofit organizations
Organizations under 501 (c) (4)
Civic Organizations promoting social welfare
Organizations under 501 (c) (6)
Business leagues
Chambers of commerce
Private Foundations
Foundations classified as private foundations by the Internal Revenue Service but which do not meet the grantmaker membership
criteria because they fund single entities or a group of pre-selected grantees.
Public or Operating Foundations
Foundations classified as public or operating foundation by the Internal Revenue Service but which do not meet the grantmaker
membership criteria because less than 50% of their budget is expended in grants rather than programs that they operate.
Supporting Organizations
Foundations that have been established under tax code 509 (a) (3) that support a single organization even if they make grants
to multiple grantees within the single organization (e.g., university, school or hospital foundation).
Other Grantmakers
Nonprofit organizations that make grants primarily to a pre-selected grantee organizations such as federated funds.
Individuals
Individuals are not eligible for associate membership in the
Alliance.
