Standards
We encourage all grantmakers to adopt their own standards
that include at least the following:
- Fulfill all fiduciary responsibilities and comply with
all legal requirements;
- Strive for the highest standards of ethical behavior;
- Operate with an identifiable, active governing board;
- Maintain constructive relationships with applicants, grantees,
donors and the public based on mutual respect, candor and
confidentiality;
- Make basic information about their grantmaking readily
available; and
- Within the grantmaker’s operation guidelines, strive
to include the perspectives, opinions and experiences of
a broad cross-section of people to inform the foundation
through its grantmaking, governance/staff structure and
business practices.
Our principles
In addition to these standards, the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance
operates under the following principles:
- All forms of philanthropy are integral to Indiana’s
continued growth and development;
- Funders of diverse backgrounds, institutions and agendas
find common ground in the Alliance
- Philanthropy is continually shaped, formed and practiced
when it is a partnership between all sectors of society;
- Broader understanding and discussion of philanthropy
benefits both the general public and practitioners;
- Dialogue between staff and trustees of philanthropic
institutions is enhanced by the inclusion of grantseekers
and other constituents;
- Philanthropy is best served by encouraging entrepreneurship
on the part of all who are involved in philanthropic activities.
