In November 1983, John Mutz, Lieutenant Governor, and Alan Shusterman, executive director of the Indiana Humanities Council
convened representatives from more than 70 foundations and corporate giving programs in Indianapolis to discuss the future of
the state's philanthropic sector. The participants at this conference focused their discussions on the opportunities for
donors to assist their communities in adapting to what state and national leaders expected to be unprecedented change in the
decade to come.
Based on the success of that first conference, the planning committee agreed to continue holding the conference the following
year and formed a steering committee, calling itself the Indiana Donors Alliance.
Today, the organization is known as the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance. The Alliance, hundreds of members strong, and has
continued the tradition of convening Indiana grantmakers every fall in Indianapolis.
