Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT)
In 1990, Lilly Endowment Inc. announced the GIFT (Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow) Initiative. The technical assistance component of this initiative is housed at the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance. GIFT was created to help establish and strengthen Indiana community foundations through challenge grants and technical assistance. Currently, 92 Community Foundations and affiliate funds provide philanthropic resources for all of Indiana's 92 counties. Indiana community foundations assets are currently estimated to exceed $1 billion.

Technical Assistance
The GIFT program staff offers community foundations technical assistance, in the form of on-site and telephone consultations, as well as specialized workshops. These efforts are enhanced by the use of outside consultants. Services range from board development to planned giving to accounting and finance.

In addition to on-site assistance, the GIFT Program hosts an annual spring conference for community foundations, and co-hosts a fall conference with the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance for all grantmakers. The community foundation conferences provide information on governance and administration to Indiana's community foundations. All conferences include facilitators who are local or national experts on topics related to philanthropy or community foundations.

Other workshops are offered that cover a range of administrative topics for community foundations. Topics have included finance, marketing, public relations, management, and planned giving. For more information on upcoming trainings, click here.

The GIFT technical assistance mission is to provide Indiana Community Foundations the tools, resources and knowledge they need to become viable, sustainable organizations. See the Ethical and Operational Standards for Indiana Community Foundations (pdf).
